Johannesburg - Robbers locked customers in a shop at Tarkastad in the Eastern Cape before making off with money, cellphones and airtime, police said on Friday.

Captain Stefanie Smith said: "Three unknown men entered the shop at about 18:30 last night. Two had hand guns. They demanded money from the owner and they left the premises with several cellphones and airtime vouchers."

The robbery took place in a shop in the Zola township of Tarkastad. The shop apparently has no name, she said.

The three men locked the customers in the shop and left without shooting or injuring anyone.

No arrests have been made yet, but an armed robbery docket has been opened.
