Taxi operators take to streets
23/06/2007 17:20 - (SA)
Johannesburg - Minibus taxi operators are protesting against the scrapping of their taxis in Pretoria's central business district, police spokesperson Inspector Paul Ramaloko said on Saturday.
"A group of about 200 protestors have blocked roads around Magopeni and are burning tyres and causing disruptions. They are dissatisfied with the municipality saying their taxis must soon be taken off the road," said Ramaloko.
He said the situation was tense and asked the public to stay away from the area.
"There is no violence taking place at moment and police are trying to control the situation," he said.
