Armed men target Pretoria bank
23/06/2007 15:18 - (SA)
Johannesburg - The First National Bank in Montana Park, north of Pretoria was robbed of an undisclosed amount of money by armed men who held staff hostage on Saturday morning, police said.
The four men entered the bank at 11:00 pretending to be clients who wanted information on foreign currencies, spokesperson Inspector Paul Ramaloko said.
They then drew their guns and demanded money from employees.
"After taking the money, one of them fired a shot with his pistol and they fled in a Nissan Hardbody," he said.
No one was harmed during the incident and police were still searching for the gang.
Saturday's robbery was the fifth to hit FNB in the Pretoria area within a month, Ramaloko said.
"There was a robbery at the Wonderboom branch, another one happened in Pretoria North, then Menlyn."
No arrests have been made in any of these cases.
Asked how robbers managed to enter the bank branches with guns, Ramaloko blamed slack security.
FNB spokespeople could not immediately be reached for comment.
