Johannesburg - A six-year-old girl from Swellendam in the Western Cape who went missing two weeks ago was found dead on Saturday, police said.
Spokesperson Superintendent Billy Jones said Mikayla Rossouw was found in a box under a bed, in the backyard shack of a neighbour's house.
"We were led to her body after detectives revisited the crime scene and questioned people, including children."
Mikayla was last seen alive on June 10, when she had been playing with friends.
"A 24-year-old man was taken in for questioning and a case of murder has been opened."
'Follow-up investigations will continue'
On Friday evening a 28-year-old woman and a 32-year-old man were arrested after they allegedly demanded money from police in exchange for helping to find the girl.
"They made five calls to the police on Wednesday evening, demanding two million rands in exchange for information leading to the girl."
Jones said that after tracking down the number they were led to the couple's home in Petersen Street, Mossel Bay.
"It is believed that the two were not involved in the disappearance of Mikayla, but follow-up investigations will continue," said Jones.
The couple face charges of fraud and attempted extortion and are scheduled to appear in the Swellendam Magistrate's Court on Monday.
