  • Pietermaritzburg - Police in northern KwaZulu-Natal are investigating the death of a 67-year-old woman whose husband claimed she was shot by an intruder.

However, it was found she died from a blow to the head with a sharp object, said Captain Jabulani Mdletshe on Monday.

Owen Smith, 70, allegedly told police that an unknown man entered their bedroom while they were sleeping at their Windfall farm in Monzi on Sunday morning and fired three shots at his wife before robbing him.

"But when police entered the couple's bedroom, the man's wife, Gwen, only had an open wound on the head... there were no cartridges or gunshot wounds."

According to Smith, the couple were woken up by their barking dogs at 01:00 on Sunday. When he got up to investigate, a man was standing in their bedroom.

"He told us that when his wife realised what was happening she tried to get out of bed... but the man shot her dead."

Smith told police the gunman then took him to another bedroom where he demanded money and a cellphone. The robber left the scene after Smith offered him R500.

There was no sign of forced entry and police were investigating the murder, Mdletshe said.
