Pietermaritzburg - Cops who interrupted an attempted heist in which two security guards had been injured have made several arrests and seized six firearms.
Spokesperson Phindile Radebe said a security van was forced off the N11 between Ladysmith and Newcastle on Monday by two vehicles and then overturned near the Dannhauser off-ramp.
"After the accident, the suspects hijacked a man driving a VW Polo and sped off with an undisclosed amount of cash."
She said that as the hijackers were making their getaway, police from Osisweni saw what was happening and began firing at the suspects.
Recovered three AK-47s
"The men then stopped the vehicle and were arrested at Ftti Park.
"Police also recovered three AK-47s and three R-1 rifles."
Radebe said the two guards, both in their late 20s, were injured.
"One was seriously injured, but both are now in a stable condition."
They were taken to a Newcastle hospital.
