Bloemfontein - A 58-year-old farmer was shot and killed by a gang of armed men who entered his house at Sekonyana farm in Ficksburg, Free State police said on Tuesday.

The armed gang gained entry into the farmhouse through a kitchen door at 19:00 on Monday and tied up Pieter Vermooten's wife, said Superintendent Susan Moseki.

"They then waited for Vermooten to arrive home, shot him in the stomach and took his safe keys."

The men took R30 000 and a 9mm pistol from Vermooten's safe.

Vermooten died on the scene and police were searching for his killers, Moseki said.
