Detective shot dead at home
27/06/2007 21:08 - (SA)
Johannesburg - A West Rand police detective was shot dead at his home near Randfontein on Wednesday, said a police spokesperson.
Superintendent Eugene Opperman said the policeman went to investigate an attempt to break into his home when he was killed.
Opperman was not able to confirm a suggestion by the Freedom Front Plus that the detective, whose name was not immediately released, was targeted because of his work on high-profile cases.
The party's Alex Raubenheimer, a councillor in nearby Krugersdorp, said the door of the detective's Toekomsrus home was broken down and he was shot without anything being taken.
"Because of the circumstances one can't help thinking the detective was specifically targeted," said Raubenheimer, calling on the government to investigate.
