Robbers stroll in, rob bank
28/06/2007 17:56 - (SA)
Johannesburg - A branch of First National Bank in the Lenasia CBD, south of Johannesburg, was robbed on Thursday by armed men who entered the bank posing as clients.
Inspector Trudie Wilken said four armed men ordered clients at the bank to lie down on the floor at 10:00 and demanded money from employees.
"They took the money and fled in a car without firing any shots."
The amount of money taken was not disclosed.
The robbery followed a similar modus operandi to that used by four armed men who robbed the FNB branch in Montana Park north of Pretoria last Saturday.
As in Lenasia, the men pretended to be clients before drawing guns and demanding money from bank employees. They then fired shots without injuring anyone and fled.
Planning security upgrade
Pretoria police spokesperson Paul Ramaloko said that in robberies at FNB branches in Wonderboom, Pretoria North, and Menlyn in the past month, armed men also simply entered the bank with their firearms and walked out with cash.
Asked how people managed to walk in and out of banks with firearms, FNB spokesperson Steve Higgins said the bank was "planning to upgrade security, including the installation of surveillance" in their branches.
Asked why the bank branches did not have metal detectors, he said: "We operate cashless branches. A very small amount of money was taken from Lenasia."
No arrests have been in connection with the five robberies.
