Johannesburg - A middle-aged homeowner was in a critical condition after he was shot and wounded in a house robbery in Pretoria on Tuesday, police said.

Captain Lucas Sithole said three men entered a house in Barentz Place, Doornpoort, at 03:30.

Sitole said the owner woke up to see what was happening.

The robbers shot the owner in the chest and fled with cellphones and electronic equipment.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Nick Dollman said paramedics arrived to find the man in a critical condition.

"He was immediately put on emergency life support and was intubated and manually ventilated before being transported to Montana hospital for further treatment," said Dollman.

He said the victim will be undergoing surgery later on Tuesday.

Police were still searching for the men and have opened a case of attempted murder and robbery.
