Bank robberies up by 118%
03/07/2007 15:59  - (SA)

  • Rise in SA murders, robberies
  • 'I just saw her takkies'
  • Peer review: Crime the SA issue
  • 'Sunset curfew' in suburbs
  • Johannesburg - Bank robberies increased by 118% in the past financial year, according to annual statistics released by police in Pretoria on Tuesday.

Robberies at business premises increased by 52.5% and robberies at residential premises by 25.4%.

Cash-in-transit heists increased by 21.9% and truck hijackings by 7.6%.

Car hijackings were up by six percent.

Driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs climbed by 14.3% and drug-related crimes by 8.2% with the illegal possession of firearms increasing by 5.6%.

Burglary, a crime that does not involve violence, decreased by 5.9% but non-residential burglaries were up by 6.3%.

Assistant Police Commissioner Chris de Kock said the latter increase could probably be attributed to the security guard strike when premises were left unguarded.

    Stock theft was down 0.8%

Commercial crimes increased by 12.6% and shoplifting was up by 0.5%.

With the stats released today, Thabo would be safer in Ivory coast, Afganistan or Iraq. No wonder he's putting a R8 000 000 wall around his house. - Lorret

      His lips were moving.....

...is the standard answer when asked "How do you know a politician is lying" ? OK, hows this for theory. An effective government needs a powerfull opposition - so, if there is a swing of votes to the DA, perhaps the ANC will start thinking about doing the jobs they are (over)payed for...... - Rob B
