Cops name top crime hotspots

Pretoria - Police will focus their resources on curbing crime in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape, which account for 62% of serious crime committed in South Africa, said National Police Commissioner Jackie Selebi in Pretoria on Tuesday.
"To get the war won, we must win the war in Gauteng, we must win the war in KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape.
"Whatever we do as an organisation, these three provinces must have an advantage over other provinces.
"If we reduce crime there we reduce 62% of overall crime in the country," he said at the presentation of the police crime statistics report for the past financial year.
Police also had to focus on the mega townships like Mamelodi, Atteridgeville, KwaMashu and Nyanga.
Selebi said house robberies were a problem and that was where people got raped and children got abused.
Deployed extra staff
There were more house robberies in newly built areas where residents did not know their neighbours than there were in established areas.
"Police have deployed extra staff to the newly built areas and have focused staffing levels on the times when robberies are most likely to occur," said Selebi.
These times, according to the police report, were between 18:00 and 20:00.
