Johannesburg - A Benoni man was arrested for defeating the ends of justice after he allegedly lied about being hijacked, Johannesburg police said on Tuesday.
Superintendent Eugene Opperman said the man made a false statement that he was hijacked by armed men in Etwatwa on Saturday.
"He said the hijackers took a Toyota Venture he was driving at the time."
When they investigated, it was established the vehicle had been stolen from outside his girlfriend's home. The man was then arrested.
During further investigation, detectives found that the same stolen vehicle was about to be sold for R2 000 in the Barcelona informal settlement.
'Working in cahoots'
"Detectives pretended to be buyers interested in buying the Venture. A suspect was arrested and the Venture recovered.
"Investigations suggest the complainant and the thief were working in cahoots."
Opperman said police would not take false cases lightly and would deal swiftly and harshly with those who committed this offence.
Both men are due to appear soon in Benoni Magistrate's Court.
