2010 reports upset Nqakula
06/07/2007 20:14 - (SA)
Johannesburg - The Safety and Security Ministry took issue on Friday with claims that a 2010 safety strategy was not mentioned at the crime-trends briefing held earlier this week.
"As anybody that attended the briefing can attest to, both Minister Charles Nqakula and National Police Commissioner Jackie Selebi discussed this issue," said ministry spokesperson Trevor Bloem.
"The commissioner specifically stated that one reason why he did not have sleepless nights about 2010 was because the police have plans in place.
"The minister in turn explained the planned safeguarding of 2010 players and supporters at ports of arrivals, places of accommodation and leisure, playing venues and the routes between all these.
South Africa successfully hosted the Rugby World Cup
"Claims to the contrary can be attributed only to the fact that there is none as deaf as those that do not want to hear."
At the briefing, Nqakula said he could not understand why there was a link between crime and the 2010 Fifa World Cup.
South Africa had successfully hosted the Rugby World Cup in 1995, when crime levels were much higher.
National Police Commissioner Jackie Selebi said destinations, routes and hotels to be used would be known and that resources would also focus on the major townships close to the stadiums, which have a statistically higher rate of crime.
Neither provided specific or operational details of a strategy.
