Johannesburg - Five members of a family, including a child, have been shot dead in Umlazi's D-section, south of Durban, SABC news reported on Saturday.

The family was travelling by car when they were shot at, causing the driver to lose control. The car was then sprayed with bullets.

"Indications are that it could possibly be related to taxi violence," KwaZulu-Natal Organised Crime Unit Director Johan Booysen told the broadcaster.

"We haven't had any incidents of this nature in the last couple of years in this particular area."
