Siyabuswa - A suspected killer who has named himself after notorious gangster Collen Chauke has been charged with 17 crimes committed in Mpumalanga's Siyabuswa area.
Collen Victor Masemula, 22, who has added "Chauke" to his name, was denied bail for the second time when he appeared in the Mdutjana magistrate's court on Monday.
"When he was arrested, he said he wanted to be called Collen Chauke, because he is a fan of Collen Chauke," said Siyabuswa police spokesperson Constable Lizzy Mashiane.
Masemula, who lives in Kameelrivier B, faces three charges of murder, one of attempted murder and 13 of armed robbery going back to May last year.
He was arrested on July 1 in Mamelodi East outside Pretoria when police received a tip off.
Masemula is implicated in crimes in Kameelrivier B, Pieterskraal A, Wolwekraal B, Weltevrede and Waterval B.
He was remanded in custody until July 20 for further police investigation.
The real Collen Chauke died in November 2003 while serving a 15-year sentence in C-Max prison.
He was sentenced in 2001 for a R12,6m cash-in-transit heist that took place in Pretoria in October 1997.
He led police on a much publicised chase when he escaped while awaiting trial in December 1997.
