Durban - A man believed to head a gang that staged cash-in-transit heists and armed robberies was arrested in Durban on Friday morning, police said.
Superintendent Muzi Mngomezulu said a member of the police's organised crime unit had received information that the man was in Durban's Bluff suburb.
He was spotted driving through the suburb in the early hours of Friday morning in a green BMW.
He refused to head police demands to stop and a car chase ensued with police attempting to shoot his tyres.
However, the man lost control and ploughed through a wooden fence into a BP service station colliding with a vehicle that was being filled up by petrol attendants.
The man, from Durban's Wentworth suburb, tried to flee on foot but was caught.
He was arrested and is expected to appear in court shortly.
Two people thought to be fellow gang-members, caught earlier by police, were expected to appear in Durban Magistrates Court for a bail application on Friday.
