Hijackers hit Uitenhage
13/07/2007 11:43  - (SA)

  • Johannesburg - Another car has been hijacked in Uitenhage, bringing the number of hijacking incidents to three in one week, police said on Friday.

Police spokesperson Gerda Swart said three armed men wearing balaclavas hijacked a 40-year-old man who was visiting friends in Rosedale on Thursday around 20:30.

The man parked his VW Velocity Golf outside the house, then three armed men entered the house and demanded the keys to the golf.

Two of the gunmen slapped and kicked the occupants of the house until the owner of the car handed over the keys. They drove off with the car which was valued at R102 000.

Swart said this brought to three times in one week that a car was hijacked in Uitenhage, as two cars were hijacked on Monday.

Police were concerned at the number of incidents.

Inspector Chris Alf who handles hijacking cases said car hijacking in the area was minimal.

However at this stage police could not speculate that a syndicate operated in the area, and investigations were ongoing.
