'Hijackers like trees'

  • Johannesburg - Benoni police issued some advice to motorists on Monday to help them avoid being hijacked.

"Some motorists are rather lax when it comes to their own safety and that of their passengers. We would be shirking our responsibility if we do not advise motorists how to perhaps avoid becoming a crime victim," said Inspector Juanita Kilian.

The public should keep their driveways clear of hiding places, as hijackers like high trees and shrubs behind which they can lie in wait.

"If you are caught unawares, do not resist, it may cost you your life. Remember that the criminal often is just as nervous as you are and any attempt to resist might be seen as an attempt to undermine his 'power'.

Kilian said: "Armed robbers depend heavily on their ability to intimidate their victims using violence and other methods of intimidation.

A combination of these factors often makes criminals very dangerous. Awareness of crime, criminal activity, and how to prevent becoming a victim are powerful tools in the fight against crime."

    The public is advised to:

  • Be on the lookout for suspicious people sitting outside driveways.

  • Keep a car-length behind the car in front of them at intersections, as an escape route when there is danger.

  • Be cautious of criminals posing as hawkers at intersections.

  • Not to keep valuable belongings lying on car seats.

  • Phone 10111 in emergencies.
