Polokwane - Limpopo's education department will spend R24m to help pupils catch up on lessons they missed during the national public servants' strike in June.
The money will be spent on paying teachers who gave winter classes during the school holidays and who will continue to give extra lessons on Saturdays.
The money will also be used to run educational programmes on radio stations and to print educational materials, said provincial education spokesperson Ndo Mangala.
He said the mid-year exams, which could not be held as a result of the strike, would be held in September.
Schools reopened in Limpopo on Monday.
Meanwhile, the turn-out at schools in neighbouring Mpumalanga was reported to be good this week.
"We are very happy with the turnout," said Mpumalanga education spokesperson Hlahla Ngwenya.
Education MEC Siphosezwe Masango visited Vukuzame senior secondary school, Phelwane primary school and Mnyamane inclusive primary school in the Nkangala district on Monday.
The strike had forced the schools to close 16 days earlier last term, but they were able to get ahead of schedule by holding winter classes during the holidays.
Ngwenya said the inclusive school, which caters for both able-bodied and disabled children, was, however, found to have only one suitably qualified teacher.
He said the department would draft a plan to help the school.
Ngwenya said education officials were also visiting other schools and would submit reports by the end of the week.
Teachers are being urged to follow the department's recovery plan to ensure they catch up with lessons.
