Bloemfontein - Free State police spokesperson Motantsi Makhele says a former police captain, Carel Smith, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for stealing R9.3m from the SA Police Service.
The Welkom Magistrate's Court suspended three years of Smith's sentence for five years on condition that he would not contravene certain provisions of the Prevention of Organised Crime Act.
Smith, 33, who worked as a financial officer at the Welkom police station, was the main accused in the money laundering case.
Three others are to appear in court on August 27.
Free State provincial commissioner Amon Mashigo welcomed the sentence: "We will deal with public servants out there, who still think that they can help themselves to the State's money as they wish."
