  • Cops stop fleeing heist gang
  • Johannesburg - A 12-man gang of robbers opened fire with AK-47 assault rifles, R4 and R5 rifles, and shotguns during a cash-heist in Mabopane on Friday.

The gang emptied a loaded SBV armoured van of 23 money boxes, said police.

Police spokesperson Paul Ramaloko said the gang struck in broad daylight, in front of a lunchtime crowd at the Brown Complex shopping centre, also known as Nonyane Stand, in Winterveld at 13:00.

While some of the robbers attacked a guard loading cash from a single money box into a First National Bank ATM inside the complex, others held up the driver of the SBV armoured van parked outside, he said.

They took 23 boxes of money out of the van, loaded them into their three getaway cars - a Jeep Cherokee and three 5-series BMWs - and opened fire before making their escape. The shots were fired into the air and ground.

The guards did not retaliate, said Ramoloko. It is not known whether their service weapons were taken.

With an estimated R200 000 in each money box, the robbers are thought to have made off with at least R4 600 000.

    Nobody was hurt.
