Johannesburg - A four-year-old girl was raped and left for dead in Mhluzi township near Middelburg, Mpumalanga police said on Saturday.

Police spokesman Captain Leonard Hlathi said a passer-by found the naked body of the girl at about 06:45 on Saturday.

"The girl was raped and left for dead in the cold," he said.

Hlathi said child's grandmother told police her granddaughter was brought to her by neighbours at about 23:00 on Friday.

This was after her mother had allegedly taken her when she had gone on a drinking spree.

The grandmother took the child to bed in her parents' bedroom and did not lock the door, expecting the parents to return soon.

In the morning - after the child was found by the passer-by - the grandmother went to look for the parents in the bedroom but they were not there.

A TV set was also missing from her house.

Hlathi said the child's parents would be charged with child neglect and abuse.

The father, 24, and the mother, 22, also have a son aged 6.

The parents allegedly took the daughter along every time they went on a drinking spree, he said.
