Metro cop knocked down
22/07/2007 17:54 - (SA)
Johannesburg - Ekurhuleni metro police spokesperson Kobeli Mokheseng says an on-duty officer is in a serious condition after he was knocked over by a delivery vehicle in Kempton Park.
Mokheseng said the 54-year-old police officer was in uniform and setting up a roadblock when he was knocked over by a Nissan 1400 light delivery vehicle about 09:00 on Sunday on the Pretoria road.
The 42-year old man driver and two passengers - men aged 28 and 30 - did not sustain any visible injuries.
The police officer was taken to hospital for medical treatment.
Mokheseng said the driver alleged that he was following a VW Golf when it was stopped by metro police officers.
Mokheseng said: "Preliminary investigations reveal that the Nissan 1400 failed to keep a safe following distance which would have allowed him to react timeously."
The delivery vehicle was inspected and found to be unroadworthy.
Traffic was affected for over an hour, he said.
