Kriel - After eight months of being raped and whipped with a sjambok, a 16-year-old girl sent a plea for help to one of her teachers.

The teacher immediately alerted police and the girl's stepfather was arrested.

The 51-year-old man from Kriel in Mpumalanga will appear in the Kriel Magistrate's Court on Wednesday on charges of rape and assault with the intention to cause grievous bodily harm.

Kriel police spokesperson Constable Ivy Mathibela said the assault began during the December holidays this year.

"The girl has lived in fear for the past eight months until she sent an SMS to a friendly teacher," said Mathibela. "The teacher did not waste time and alerted us. We reacted swiftly and arrested the man."

The stepfather is accused of raping the girl up to three times in one night at times, as well as whipping her with a sjambok.

The girl has been placed in the care of social workers.

Mathibela said the girl's mother is believed to be in KwaZulu-Natal.
