Husky decapitator fined R10 000
24/07/2007 16:38  - (SA)

  • 12 000 rally online for husky
  • Puppy dies horrific death
  • Dog decapitated with chain-saw
  • Pretoria - The Delmas Magistrate's Court has sentenced Phillip Matthysen, the man who cut off the head of his young Husky with a chainsaw to a R10 000 fine or 12 months' imprisonment, suspended for five years.

Matthysen was sentenced after pleading guilty of criminal charges relating to the Animal protection Act, the SPCA said.

He was also ordered to pay R5 000 to the Springs SPCA

Charges against co-accused Alec Serate were withdrawn.

Although Matthysen was allowed to keep his other dogs, the court ruled that he may never own a Husky again.

Matthysen sawed the dog's head off in February because it had eaten his Macaw parrot.

      And you call that justice?

Before we do not value life, incidents like this and other violent crimes will continue! Its clear that even the courts are powerless! - Werfetter

      WHAT? 10 GRAND?
    24/07/2007 18:10
That's pathetic. No community service at least? I hope he gets the crap beaten out of him by someone who recognizes his ugly mug somewhere. How long will retards like this still get away with blatant cruelty to animals? As long as the justice system allows it. - CJ

This is absolutely disgusting. This man cut off his pet's jaw with a chainsaw and left it in extreme pain before decapitating it. At the very least he should never ever be allowed to keep animals again. The fact that he not only got away without a jail sentence but that he is allowed to carry on as before sends a clear message that the South African courts do not take seriously even the basic responsibilities around the care of animals. No wonder we have such high levels of animal abuse. - Sam Jenkin

Who could possibly give someone like this a sentence like that? I hope Phillip gets his head kicked in. - Nigel

At the very least apart from the fine he should be doing community service at one of the many rescue organisations ... and why should he be allowed another animal ????? The message been sent here is its ok to abuse just pay a fine and its dandy .... next it will be a child!!!!!! - Carol

Justice is a joke in this country!
    24/07/2007 19:59
This country's justice system is an absolute joke.A fine of only R 10 000 for such animal abuse is is despicable. This country is really making its mark as a 3rd world country when it treats animals like this? What else did you expect from the sick system. Let's hope the place goes to the dogs soon, it might work out better for animals without the human race. - N.Briggs
