26/07/2007 11:23  - (SA)

  • 7 'dangerous' prisoners escape
  • Mathe's dad 'smuggled muti'
  • Escaped prisoner re-arrested
  • C-Max escapees recaptured
  • Durban - Four awaiting trial prisoners escaped from a Durban police station by cutting through the wire mesh covering the courtyard of the police cells, police said on Thursday.

Police spokesperson Constable Lungi Jama said it was not immediately clear how or what the four men used to cut through the wire mesh above their heads at Durban's Westville police station on Wednesday morning.

The four men have been identified as Sibusiso Maya, 29, Sihle Masango, 24, Xolani Dlamini, 19, and Senzo Magwaza, 23.

Maya was arrested for armed robbery, while the other three men were arrested for house breaking.

Jama said the four had appeared in court on July 18, but their cases had been remanded, pending further investigations.

She said all four should be viewed as dangerous, especially Maya.
