Durban - A policeman was shot dead in the northern KwaZulu-Natal town of Hluhluwe moments after arresting six men caught in the act of attempting to rob the local municipal offices, police said on Thursday.
Police spokesperson Captain Jabulani Mdletshe said four men held up and disarmed a security guard outside the Hluhluwe municipal offices on Wednesday.
However, a fireman noticed the incident and alerted the police.
Mdletshe said a short chase ensued before the four men were arrested. As the 44-year old Inspector Emmanuel Thabethe was opening the doors of the police van into which the six suspects were to have been loaded, one of the men drew a firearm and shot him.
Thabethe was fatally wounded with the bullet entering his shoulder and then causing severe internal damage.
Mdletshe said fire brigade members helped arrest the four men.
Later Hluhluwe police arrested another two men, who were probably coming to assist their accomplices.
The six men will be facing charges of armed robbery and murder and are expected to appear in court shortly.
Two Nissan bakkies, two firearms and four cellphones were recovered.
