Puppy killer now faces SPCA

Johannesburg - A man found guilty of beheading his pet Husky puppy has outraged an animal rights group, which is threatening to lay new charges of animal cruelty against him.
Self-confessed dog-killer Phillip Matthysen was slapped with a suspended fine of R10 000 rand or 12 months in jail after being found guilty by a Delmas court.
He was however not stripped of his right to own animals, which the SPCA hopes to challenge in a higher court, The Star reported on Thursday.
Matthysen used a chainsaw to decapitate the four-month-old puppy while his employee held it down in February.
The puppy's crime was that it had killed his parrot.
While the magistrate relied on a veterinary report claiming Matthysen's other pets were in a good condition, the SPCA was further incensed after finding one of his two Great Danes with open wounds during a formal visit to his house.
The Star reported that the SPCA would re-investigate the case.
