  • Johannesburg - Two men were arrested after they tried to break into a bank in Braamfontein early on Monday morning, said Johannesburg police.

Police spokesperson Captain Bhekizizwe Mavundla said the men, both in their early 20s, were part of a group of four men trying to break into Capitec Bank just before 02:00.

Mavundla said a security guard was doing his patrol in the area when he heard a suspicious noise at the back of the bank. He then spotted three men trying to break into the bank.

He called the Hillbrow police and other security guards for back up.

When the men saw the security guards and police they started shooting at them.

The police returned fire, injuring one suspect in the back. The other two men then fled.

Police found and arrested the alleged getaway driver who was waiting in a red Toyota Camry.

Industrial instruments including a grinder, bolt-cutter, blades, crowbar and hammer were found on the scene.

The injured man is at Johannesburg Hospital under police guard.

He and the arrested driver will appear in court, as soon as he is discharged from hospital.

They will be charged with an attempted break-in, said Mavundla.

More arrests are expected soon, he said.
