Cape Town - "Yes, the death penalty for him. In five years' time he'll still be living in jail, breathing. But in five years' time we're not going to have our son back."

A bitter Thomas Siebert, father of murdered six-year-old Steven, said on Tuesday that the death penalty would have been the correct punishment for paedophile Theunis Christiaan Olivier had it still been in place.

Olivier was found guilty by Judge Essa Moosa of kidnapping, sexually assaulting and murdering Steven.

In emotionally-charged moments in the Cape High Court, Siebert glared at his son's killer.

After the guilty verdict, Siebert spoke of the grief caused by his son's death.

    'The pain is always there'

Responding when asked if things were a little easier for him and his wife Elaine now, he said: "No, no, no. Of course not. The pain's always present."

Olivier, with a beaten-up face, had indicated that he wanted to address the Cape High Court himself on Wednesday, but Siebert said he wasn't interested in his story.

He had nothing to say to the man who had murdered his son.

There were obvious red marks on the side of Olivier's face on Tuesday morning after he'd been beaten up in the bakkie that brought the detainees to court.

Siebert's comment: "He's getting what he deserves. He's the victim of his own deeds."

Olivier admitted on Monday that he was guilty of all three charges against him.

His lawyer, Advocate Tobie Benade, asked for the trial to be postponed until 11:00 on Wednesday. He was instructed by Olivier to make the request because he wanted to testify.

"He's just trying to drag things out. He's trying to get sympathy and this is a final effort to get attention," Siebert said bitterly.
