  • Johannesburg - A medical student was raped at Chris Hani-Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto, Talk Radio 702 reported on Tuesday.

The student was apparently working in the gynaecology unit of the hospital and was raped while on her way to fetch blood samples for a doctor on Monday.

Staff at the hospital said students usually drove the approximately one kilometre journey to the laboratory because of safety concerns.

The report said hospital chief executive Arthur Manning confirmed the incident, although further details were not immediately available.

The provincial health department condemned the incident, the SABC reported. It said the student had received support and counselling.

The Democratic Alliance's Gauteng health spokesperson, Jack Bloom, said "no stone must be left unturned" to find the perpetrator.

"It is very plain that security needs to be stepped up at our hospitals, but the particular exploitative conditions of medical interns must also be examined," he said.
