Johannesburg - Three men were arrested after trying to hijack a minibus taxi full of passengers, Johannesburg metro police said on Wednesday.
Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said four armed men tried to hijack the taxi along Cedar Road near Diepsloot on Tuesday night.
"The men held up the taxi driver who had been transporting passengers from Diepsloot to Randburg at about 19:20," said Minnaar.
Minnaar said that while the hijackers were inside the vehicle the taxi driver drove towards an oncoming metro police van.
"The taxi driver spotted an oncoming police van travelling in the opposite direction and drove towards it in order to get the officers' attention."
One of the hijackers fired shots at the two officers but missed.
"Police returned fire and the taxi came to a stop with one of the men wrestling with the taxi driver.
"The officers called for back-up and when other officers arrived at the scene, the three men, who were all in their late 20s, were arrested," said Minnaar.
The fourth hijacker ran away, and an unlicensed firearm was confiscated.
No passengers were injured.
"The men face charges of hijacking and possession of an unlicensed firearm," said Minnaar.
