Durban - A man who held his former girlfriend hostage and then shot himself died in a Durban hospital overnight, paramedics said on Friday.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said the man died around 22:00 on Thursday in the Umhlanga hospital.

On Thursday, Superintendent Vincent Mdunge said the man kept the 20-year-old woman hostage at her home in Verulam near Durban from about 13:00 until 18:00.

Hostage negotiators, the police task force, and paramedics were sent to the scene. The negotiators had hoped to end the standoff peacefully, but the man shot himself in the head.

The woman was unharmed.
