Polokwane - A Limpopo man allegedly tried to blow up his girlfriend with mining explosives during a quarrel, police said on Friday.
The explosives were set up close to the woman's face while they argued outside a house in Maake, northern Limpopo on Thursday, Superintendent Ronel Otto said.
When they exploded she sustained serious injuries to the right side of her face and he sustained serious injuries to both hands.
Both were heavily sedated in hospital so police were not yet able to form a clearer picture of what happened.
The man's left hand was severely damaged, leading police to also investigate whether he had attempted kill himself with explosives afterwards, or whether both were injured in the same blast.
Police would also investigate how he obtained the explosives.
He would be charged with attempted murder and possession of explosives when he had recovered sufficiently, Otto said.
