Johannesburg - A Free State police spokesperson says a 27-year-old man has been arrested for the murder of his wife in Virginia near Welkom.

Spokesperson William Mokwena said the man was arrested at his home at Wonderfontein, Virginia, on Saturday afternoon.

It is believed that he crushed his wife's forehead using bricks, said Mokwena.

"The man was found sitting next to his wife. Her forehead was smashed in with bricks and she was still alive when the police arrived. She died soon afterwards," Mokwena said.

The man is scheduled to appear in the Virginia Magistrate's Court on Monday.
