Johannesburg - A mob was running riot on the R511 at Diepsloot on Sunday night, said police.

This after officers opened fire on them with rubber bullets while trying to rescue a man they were beating over accusations of rape and robbery, said Pretoria police spokesperson Lucas Sithole.

He said no-one had laid any charges against the man yet. He was in a serious condition in a local hospital.

Johannesburg metro police spokesperson Wayne Minnaar said the R511 was closed to traffic between the R28 and Mnandi Street.

Sithole said the group started off 500-strong, but dwindled to between 100 and 200 people after its captive was taken away.

However, those remaining stoned the police and at least three private vehicles. They caused only damage to the vehicles, though, injuring no-one.

"(Police) are doing their best to bring the situation back to normal," he said.
