Pretoria - Apartheid-era police minister Adriaan Vlok, ex-police chief Johan van der Merwe and three other former high-ranking policemen quietly entered the Pretoria High Court on Friday morning.

Rev Frank Chikane from the office of the presidency, took his seat in the front row behind them.

Before sitting down the five accused were faced by a clique of press photographers.

Reporters and photographers made up most of those in the public gallery.

Before proceedings started, Vlok and Van Der Merwe spoke quietly to one another. The other three continued to stare at the photographers in front of them.
