Vlok, others make deal with State

Pretoria - Apartheid-era police minister Adriaan Vlok, ex-police chief Johan van der Merwe and three other former high-ranking policemen confirmed in the Pretoria High Court on Friday that there had been an agreement between the State and themselves over the attempted murder charges they face.
Vlok, Van der Merwe, former Major-General Christoffel Smith and colonels Gert Otto and Johannes Van Staden would plead guilty to the attempted murder of activist Rev Frank Chikane, currently in the office of the presidency, 18 years ago.
In exchange, they would receive an "appropriate sentence", the court heard.
Chikane was in court if he needed to answer any questions on the crime committed when he was the secretary general of the SA Council of Churches.
Shortly before the five elderly, grey-haired men took their seats in the dock, Chikane joined National Prosecuting Authority officials in the front row of the public gallery.
Proceedings started after police herded out a group of foreign and local photographers who had lined up to take pictures of the accused.
