Johannesburg - Four security guards were robbed of over three million rand and forced to drink petrol at a mine in Middelburg, Mpumalanga police said on Saturday.
Captain Leonard Hlathi said the SBV Security guards had been delivering and loading money to ATMs in Middelburg and Witbank when they were attacked by two armed men at Arnot Mine near Middelburg around 07:30 on Friday.
Hlathi said before the guards could get out of the vehicle, two armed men forced them back inside at gunpoint.
Another four men, armed with AK-47s, pistols and a five-litre can of petrol then joined them.
"They forced the guards to drink the petrol and then poured the petrol all over their bodies and in the car, threatening to set them alight," he said.
The guards were instructed to open the safe and 16 bags of money, estimated at over three million rand, were taken.
The robbers also stole the guards' four 9mm pistols and one LM5 rifle belonging to the company.
The men fled the scene in a blue Polo with tinted windows and a silver Land Cruiser.
Hlathi said the guards - Sammy Nkwayi, 28, Sibusiso Theko, 26, Rion Hlez, 27, and Jaco Stolz, 28 - were slightly injured.
No arrests had been made.
Anyone with information that could lead to the arrests of the alleged robbers could call Captain Gcabashe on 013-283-3800 or 082-319-3481.
Hlathi said a reward would be given for information that could assist police.
