Durban - A mayor in northern KwaZulu-Natal has been arrested, along with two accomplices, on charges of murder.
Police spokesperson Director Phindile Radebe on Saturday confirmed that "the mayor from one of the municipalities in Dundee (area)" had been arrested.
The mayor was reportedly arrested on Thursday along with two accomplices on charges relating to the June 15 shooting of ANC branch chairperson Grishen Bujram, 42.
The trio are expected to appear in the Dundee Magistrate's Court on Monday.
Bujram was shot dead in his car in the Sibongile township on the night of June 15.
He was seen to be critical of the Nukani and the Endumeni municipal council and it is believed he had threatened to expose "unprocedural activities" related to housing and other matters.
A popular figure, his murder was met with shock.
Last Saturday hundreds of people marched through Dundee demanding that police make an arrest.
The docket was handed over to the Provincial Political Violence Task Team in Durban. The arrests were made by the Organised Crime Unit.
