Johannesburg - Western Cape police are searching for three armed robbers who held up security guards at the Knysna Mall.

Police spokesperson Ntobeko Mangqwengqwe said the two security guards had parked their vehicle in the parking lot on Tuesday and were walking towards an ATM machine with three cash boxes when the incident took place.

"Before they could deposit the money into the machine, the three suspects pitched up and held them at gunpoint," he said.

"They snatched the three boxes, with an undisclosed amount of cash, and fled in a white Toyota Corolla".

Witnesses told police the suspects headed in the direction of Plettenberg Bay.

During the escape, three shots were allegedly fired but no injuries were reported.
