Suspect's R1m bail reduced
12/09/2007 20:12 - (SA)
Cape Town - The Cape Town Magistrate's Court on Wednesday reduced to R500 000 the R1m bail granted last year to a Chinese man accused with two alleged accomplices of dealing in perlemoen and racketeering.
Scorpions prosecutor Blain Lazarus and defence attorney Anthony Broadway had agreed to the reduction of bail for suspect Zhiming Yuan, 44.
Lazarus told the court Yuan had, with permission, left the country several times while on bail and had returned each time.
This had led the State to reconsider Yuan's position, and there was now no reason to oppose his reduction of bail. Interest
Broadway told the court Yuan, an entrepreneur, had so far permanently lost about R10 000 per month that his R1m would have earned in interest.
He said the case had so far been finally postponed twice for further investigation, and the State now wanted a third and final postponement to complete the investigation.
Broadway said he could have objected to the third postponement, which would have caused the State serious complications if the postponement had been refused.
However, the agreement was that the defence would not oppose the postponement, if the State agreed to the reduction of bail.
With Yuan in the dock are Denver Langenhoven, 32, and Long Cai Wu, 49.
They face charges of dealing in perlemoen worth R12m and racketeering.
They were warned to appear in court again on December 4.
