'Squatters, volunteer to relocate'
13/09/2007 12:08 - (SA)
Johannesburg - The SA National Civic Organisation (Sanco) appealed to residents in the Joe Slovo informal settlement in Cape Town on Thursday to volunteer to move out of the area.
Sanco chairperson in Langa, Thobile Sikani, said on Thursday Sanco was disturbed by Monday's violent protest by Joe Slovo residents.
Crowds set up barricades of burning tyres and logs on the N2 highway. The protesters also damaged a number of homes under construction at the N2 Gateway housing project.
The protesters are objecting to their planned relocation from the area to temporary houses at Delft to make way for the Gateway project, which is alongside Joe Slovo.
"We call on our people in the area to voluntarily move to Delft," Sikani said.
He said Sanco would make sure that development took place in Langa-Joe Slovo as planned.
