Bloemfontein - A man involved in a car accident was admitted to Bloemfontein Medi-Clinic, after allegedly being hacked with an axe in an apparent road rage incident.

Johannes Matsasa was involved in car accident in Harvey Road, Bloemfontein, on Wednesday afternoon, said police spokesperson superintendent Annelie Wrensch. He was apparently driving a vehicle belonging to Defensor security company.

Matsasa and the driver of the second car became embroiled in an argument, upon which the driver of the second vehicle called his two brothers for help.

They arrived at the scene of the accident and joined the argument. One of them took out an axe and hacked Matsasa behind the neck.

They also damaged his car with the axe.

Matsasa was rushed to the Medi-Clinic and underwent surgery on Thursday. He has not yet been able to make a statement.

Hospital staff could not comment on his condition by late on Thursday.

Three men, all brothers aged 26, 28 and 31, were arrested in connection with the incident.

Three charges were laid against them, namely malicious damage to property, assault with the intent to do serious bodily harm and defeating the ends of justice. They will appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrate's Court on Friday.
