Delmas - A security guard was shot dead while trying to stop an armed robbery at a branch of First National Bank in Delmas, Mpumalanga police said on Friday.
Captain Klaas Maloka said the guard, believed to be in his 30s, and employed by Maximum Security, was trying to stop armed men who stormed into the bank in Willowbrook square at about 15:00.
"The six, armed with AK47s and nine millimetre pistols stormed into the bank and pointed their firearms at everyone in the bank," said Maloka.
"They jumped over the counter and took an undisclosed sum of cash and as they were about to exit the bank, the security guard tried to stop them," he said.
He was shot in the head and died on the scene.
The robbers made their getaway in a white Volvo and a white Mazda, later found abandoned.
No arrests have been made.
