Cash heist at service station
19/10/2007 11:26 - (SA)
Durban - An armed gang of five men made off with a cash box containing R25 000 on Thursday after a cash-in-transit heist at a Durban service station, police confirmed on Friday.
Police spokesperson Superintendent Vincent Mdunge said the incident took place at the Total garage on North Coast Road, Greenwood Park.
A Coin Security van entered the service station and one guard got out of the vehicle.
He was apparently removing a cash box when the armed men confronted him, Mdunge said.
"He was robbed of a Norinco pistol and a cash box containing around R25 000," he said.
No shots were fired and no injuries were reported. A second guard, sitting in the van, was uninjured.
A Total petrol attendant said the men then ran around the corner, jumped into a NPN registered blue Toyota Corolla and fled.
Police sources said the vehicle was recovered a short while later in Newlands but Mdunge could not confirm this.
Greenwood Park detectives were investigating and no arrests had been made, police said.
