Du Toit: PI company paid bail
29/10/2007 18:26 - (SA)
Cape Town - A firm of private investigators paid bail for former National Intelligence Agency informer Phillip du Toit when he was arrested on a perlemoen charge, the Bellville Magistrate's Court heard on Monday.
Du Toit is now applying for bail on unrelated charges of armed robbery and possession of stolen goods.
The SABC reported that inspector Cornelius Engelbrecht of the police's organised crime unit told the court that the R250 000 bail in the perlemoen case was paid by Niel van Heerden.
Van Heerden owns a franchise of private investigators George Fivaz and Associates.
The perlemoen arrest occurred in May this year.
Engelbrecht said Du Toit had the potential to be involved in crime while out on bail.
Du Toit has also been named as one of the figures at the centre of Cape Town's "spy row".
He was tasked by the city to investigate claims that controversial councillor Bhadi Chaaban had sought to bribe other councillors to cross the floor.
