Police get tough in Diepsloot
01/11/2007 12:04 - (SA)
Johannesburg - Police used rubber bullets several times against hundreds of Diepsloot shack dwellers on Thursday, during a protest against evictions.
Police spokesperson Inspector Paul Ramaloko said that almost 600 shack dwellers began stoning police at 07:30 on Thursday morning.
"The residents started stoning police, so we had to fire rubber bullets at them," Ramaloko said.
Police had also made several arrests, he said.
Protests against the evictions began at 03:00, when residents began blocking roads with stones and disrupting traffic.
A Sapa photographer said that residents were also having a verbal "stand-off" with police and refused to leave.
Resident Lawrence Tshabalala, said that he was "fighting for his rights".
"We want to speak to the councillor personally; we were not given sufficient time to move. Where are we supposed to go now? This is my home," Tshabalala said.
