Johannesburg - A taxi driver was in a critical condition after he was shot in the head by two hijackers in Mamelodi, east of Pretoria on Tuesday, police said.
Inspector Paul Ramaloko said the man - in his early 30s - was hijacked in Lusaka in Mamelodi East around 17:30.
"The taxi driver was shot in the head. He was then thrown out of the car and left to die," said Ramaloko.
He said the flying squad and Garsfontein police were alerted and spotted the men travelling on Hans Strijdom drive heading towards Tembisa.
"They were involved in a high speed chase when the driver of the minibus lost control and drove off the road into a hole," he said.
The men - in their late 20s - were arrested and the firearm used to shoot the taxi driver was also recovered.
They were expected to appear in the Pretoria Magistrate's Court soon.
The taxi driver was admitted to hospital in a "very critical" condition.
There were no passengers in the taxi at the time of the hijacking.
